K-POP to the "TOP"
Hello everyone, and welcome back to K to the POP!
For this blog, I want to talk about how K-pop is becoming worldwide famous. Since there are uncountable reasons why K-pop achieved global popularity; therefore, I will tell you the top five reasons why K-pop has become extremely popular around the world.
Memorable melody, and catchy lyric
To produce a perfect pop song, the song's melody has to be in a great beat and tempo, as well as having a remarkable lyrics. Furthermore, a good pop song should have catchy hooks and sing-along lyrics, which I think K-pop did an excellent job. I would say that K-pop is in the top ranking for making memorable melodies, as well as the catchy lyrics that will be stuck in your head after you listen to it once. Although the lyric of the song is in a different language, you still can mumble along with the songs.
Examples:
Red Velvet = Zimzalabim
Park Jihoon = Wing
Bigbang = Bang Bang Bang
Super Junior = Sorry Sorry
Choreography
Another area that helps K-pop attracts people’s attention are the choreography and artists’ danceability. According to Prince (2018), “Choreography is another area where K-pop artists completely dominate.” The professional dancers are usually a person who choreographed the dance routine for K-pop artists, and the dance generally very unique and complicated. I confirmed that some of the dance choreographies are very challenging because I attempted to do a dance cover once, and of course, I gave up (it is too hard!!). I could say that, for you to be able to master the dance, you will need to be very dedicated and spend a lot of your time practicing the dance choreographies. Furthermore, for the live performances, the artists also perform the same dance routines that were in the music video to prove that they are genuinely talented with their singing and dancing skills. Also, If you look closely at the end of their live performances, you will notice that the majority of K-pop artists are out of breath and breathing heavily due to the tiredness from singing and dancing at the same time.
Examples:
NCT Dream = Boom
SEVENTEEN = Home
BTS = Boy with Luv
TXT = Crown
Baekhyun (Exo) = Candy
Unique music video and storytelling
I could say that K-pop did an excellent job of creating a unique music video that also includes storytelling. You would not see anything like this in other music industries. Furthermore, K-pop knows how to play with the colors; if you get a chance to watch the music video, you will see that the video could be either super colorful and cheerful, dark and mysterious, or very contrast but grasp your attention. I would say that the graphic teams have a perfect sense of using color, create graphics, or effects to match with the theme of the artists’ song. Not only that, they have a good sense of graphics, but their music video also includes the storyline. Before K-pop artists release their new song, they would create the story that would lead to the lyrics of their new song.
Examples:
WayV = Turn back time
Exo = Obsession
Ong Seong Wu = Gravity
NCT Dream = Ridin
Diverse talents
Not only the K-pop artists can sing and dance, but they also have other skills that would surprise you. The different abilities include acting, songwriter, or music producer. For acting, several K-pop artists played in the lead role in popular series or movies, and the public accepted that they did have fantastic acting skills. Furthermore, for writing a lyric or producing a song, the artists sometimes participate in writing a small part of the lyrics or producing the songs for their new album with their main producers. Another skill is they could speak in multiple languages. They learned different languages to be able to communicate with their fans from different countries. Nowadays, many K-pop artists are capable of speaking in other languages, which differ from the past; they can only speak Korean, and it is hard for both artists and international fans to communicate with each other.
Examples:
Doh Kyun-soo (Exo): He starred in various television dramas and movies - Pure Love (2016), My Annoying Brother (2016), Positive Physique (2016), Room No. 7 (2017), 100 Days My Prince (2018), Alon with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2018), and Swing Kids (2018).
Cha Eun Wo (Astro): He starred in various television dramas - To Be Continued (2015), My Romantic Some Recipe (2016), Sweet Revenge (2017), My ID is Gangnam Beauty (2018), Top Management (2018), Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung (2019), Soul Plate (2019), and True Beauty (2020).
Rowoon (SF9): He played the lead role in MBC's television series, "Extraordinary You" (2019).
Collaborating with other popular artists around the world
Another reason K-pop artists are well known is by collaborating with other famous artists worldwide. I would say that working with other artists in different countries definitely helps K-pop artists to brand themselves and reach out to their new target markets.
Here is a list of some K-pop artists' songs that collaborated with international artists that you should listen to if you have a chance.
Black Pink x Dua Lipa = Kiss and Makeup

Nichada, I really like to read your blog. It is very interesting and informative. I watched a couple of their YouTube videos, and I am really amazed by the choreographies. I cannot imagine how tired they are after the live performance. Also, I had no idea they did so many collaborations with other famous singers. Great blog!
ReplyDeleteI actually laughed out loud when you mentioned that the songs are catchy enough to mumble along with the words, even though they’re in a different language. I haven’t listened to much K-Pop before reading your blog, but my sister still makes fun of me for mumbling along to “Dragostea Din Tei” by O-Zone--so catchy. I noticed that some of their songs like “Turn Back Time” briefly switch to English—which gives me a chance to sing along to the chorus like I know what’s going on. I was totally floored by the choreography videos you linked. You were not kidding when you said it’s complicated. What’s really amazing is that they can do all the moves and manage to stay in sync so well. I will definitely be adding some of these to my workout playlists.
